Avebury and the landscape around it has gone through many stages of human interaction/development. There was the Sanctuary, a minor henge at Avebury, then a larger henge, then the stones, then the avenues etc....

Each stage had a few hundred years between them and so it is unlikely that the people who undertook the alterations had exactly the same intensions as the people before them.

At each stage the meaning and purpose of each change was differennt and we'll never know what that purpose was (unless you're mad like Dames of course - great fiction writer but that's it).

There are only three stages we can be sure of what the reasoning was.

1) The destruction by the puritanical church - destroy all things pagan

2) The resurrection by Keiller - it became a monument to his ego

3) Gift shops - a temple to money and new age bollocks

So ... I put it to you that what you see today is simply a continuation of tradition. A new meaning, a new purpose and a new look.
