Im just opposed to the idea that anyone feels they have any right over ancient sites and the activities that take place there.

Things like that cut both ways. There were people around that wanted to do other things at the site and so these people were being stopped by the others.

The arguments about what can and can't happen at sites is a tedious one. Those that don't show respect for the monument, think they know what they were originally used for better than anyone else, believe they are actually part of that ancient & dead (not to mention fictional) tradition, and those that just don't use common sense are in the wrong.

If the people come back to hold the same ceremony next year and someone has built a kids adventure playground on top of it because they thought that's what they were originally used for I'm sure they be a little bit pissed off. With that in mind people should only do things at sites that, if done on a daily basis, won't do the site long term harm.

Doing a one-off or annual ceremony with a fire might seem ok to some as the damage caused by that sole fire could be minimal. But what if another group come along the next day and have their one-off ceremony? What if that continues for a whole year? Site fucked!

And did someone really say, "What harm can a few candles do?"

Oh dear. When people say they care about something the least they should do is find out exactly what the consequences of their actions are, no matter how small. Once they know the outcome they should ask themselves what would be the outcome if every single visitor did the same thing.
