I dont think the law is the real issue olly, its just about treating the sites with respect and keeping them safe for future generations. I get your point but if everyone was allowed to do exactly what they want then we probably wouldnt have any sites left to visit anyway. Take stonehenge for example. just how many chips of rock should be allowed to be taken by visitors each year / month / week. Is it right for us to deface something which we don't personally own.
