Achnabreck seems remarkably complex and self contained. Settlements would have been separated by forest so a carving of an individual 'village' is feasible.

I agree that there is huge variation but I really don't believe we can assume that all RA served the same purpose or represented the same concept just because the style of execution looks similar.


The overlapping would occur if more than one stone was a map of a similar area , despite careful attention to the detail we have ,as yet , found nothing like that .

The great variation is found with a limited amount of basic motifs .

RA may well be polysemic and being abstract , purpose and representaiton gives plenty of scope for interpretation .
