It makes sense that the Stonehenge builders wouldn't want older mortise holes to be visible from the ground - that would look sloppy.
well there is a bluestone with mortice holes that is lying down with another stone across it.
That was from a later age and a different set of architects/designers though - and with an obviously limited number of bluestones to go round, maybe it was a case of necessity. I doubt anyone would suddenly click their fingers and say "I know - there's a better one in Boles Barrow!"
