ah well I retract that bit about the source of the Avon. It was just me repeating things I've read in books, without thinking. Because when you look at the map it's not obviously near the source of anything I don't think?? Though it is at a confluence, perhaps I meant that. It is quite near where the ridgeway (if you stretch it out a bit) would cross the river. (And I deny any notion of expert knowledge. I like the place and I am just repeating things I've read in books, see above)
