Yeah. I remember someone telling me that the carved stones may have been painted too. And the carved Saxon crosses in Ilkley church were...

When we wandered over the (blackened, smouldering) moor today, we found lots of places where the underlying clay had been oxidised. Patches of vivid red ochre, just waiting to be painted on summat...
