Chalk was used in chalk-country for the same reason that quartz was used in quartz-country, because it's white and bright and not green or grey. Monuments being faced with chalk where there's chalk and quartz where there's quartz is not coincidental, it's because the same effect was desired. Quartz would not perform the same physical task as chalk, so I think you need to rethink that idea. Sorry.
