Cruitne are thought to be the earlier name for the Dál nAraide, who were Gaelic speaking and there is no evidence that they were related to Picts.They used the Derbfine system for succession and not the British system. Scholars such as Kenneth Jackson and Daibhi ó ógain are adamant about this.The Dál nAraide were based in South Antrim.
