How about Neolithic/Bronze Age peoples applying colours or dyes to stone carvings to make them stand out? Is there any evidence of this (I doubt it)? Some rock art isn't too obvious, and being carved on hard rock, obviously hasn't been too eroded with time, so to make it more visible would colouring it have been a way of showing it?
