As with the term 'Celt' the same kind of confusion applies to 'Pict'.
The 'Picts' as we call them were a tribe/group identifiable by their artifacts, coloured stone balls (Ohhh, arrr) highly carved symbol stones and specific place names. Their recorded history is relatively modern, occuring between late Roman to late Viking and the formation of modern Scotland.
An example of Pictish confusion is that Brochs are often associated with them, whereas these are much earlier structures.
They were indigenous to a very specific area, ranging from the mid-Highlands and East coast of Scotland to the Orkneys.
Their main contribution to recorded history is when the pictish army under King Brude/Bridei annihilated the Angle/Nothumbrian army at the Battle of Dunnichen (Nechtansmere), 20th May 685AD. This decisive event finally put an end to the southern British (English) tribes northerly encroachment and without this victory there would undoubtedly be no modern Scotland. As Churchill would have said, "This was our finest hour!"
However, as the title of this thread suggests the generic name for all occupants of these islands by the Roman/Greeks is derived from the same root as The Picts, as in the painted ones, as we all undoubtedly were at one point or another!!
