No, the Houghton Common circle made those two notches necessary. A picture of the moon setting into one of them would be a coup. Could be done in the summer. Camp in the trees down by the Lough.
This is looking good right now - http://www.maeshowe.co.uk/ - the sun's nearly lined up. I guess the illumination of the niche will be smaller when the sun's at the solstice and lower in the sky. My Blackstone would fit in the niche perfectly.
Got a Standard 8 film camera for opening the Slaggyford Long Barrow ! No costumes (or permission) yet.
