Sorry to dig this up again but I came across it researching welsh sites :)

I dont know if it's been discussed since but is it not more plausible (for the majority of Irish sites anyway) that the cairn was part of the construction phase and meant to be removed once the capstones were in place and the structure settled over some months/years?
