Thanks for the weblog. I believe the ancient Cumbrians were farmers first and the stone and metal tools being made there then catered to their needs. The size of some of the monuments is a testimony to the wealth generated by these activities. There is another row or avenue mentioned further north, though just one stone remains. This is sometimes listed at Carlton Mill - near the Grey Yauds.

If you are ever in the east please take a look at the Station Field Earthwork at Alston. The rough map reference is NY 714 467. It's listed as Iron Age defensive - but it's older than that (and not defensive). There's still some large scale stone monuments in the South TYne Valley but they take some searching for. They are not mentioned by antiquarians of a bygone era and so entirely open to interpretation.
