It is difficult but the stories are not all impossible. (Just mainly). I think Thomas Hardy mentions Year and a Day marriages somewhere. Nowadays it might be known as serial monogamy. A person putting their hand through a perforated stone explains partly why so many of the these stones have been broken (as un Godly) and also may explain the ritual of a male asking for someone's hand in marriage.
