My feeling is they may have started as roughly pecked grooves and were then ground to shape for whatever reason. The design could have eroded that way like many of the stones in the area but it does seem to be too uniformly shaped to have got that way by chance. It reminded me a lot of those sheets of corrugated asbestos that used to be used for garage and shed roofs. When you look closely at it, it is quite pitted where crystals have dissolved out of the surface and I can't think that it was ever as smooth as Julian's Polisher - the rock is just too roughly grained. I'd love it to be identified as an Ilkley Polisher though :-)
