Andy, the stone with the grooves is on further over on Craven Hall Hill not far from the Silsden to Menston Road. You're right about there being quite a few rocks in the Green Gates area (but I had to look in the book to find out), I haven't spent much time in that area but after your description of the 'Pitchfork' I can see which stone you mean from the illustrations. Isn't there a cairn up there that was reconstruction by the local Grammar School or something?
I can't help you with the 12thC cross, but I've heard the story of the market close to the Badger Stone, it seems an unlikely place to hold a gathering like that – imagine having to carry you're wares up the hill from Ilkley!
