The postcard I agree about, it's just not on. But the earlier map, if it's fanciful, seems to be fanciful in a way that fits very well with the elements that remain now. The shrinkage often seems to be from one side only, not both as you might expect, as if one edge was a known datum and the other was unfixed. One thought would be that the "skeleton" was cut deeper and the "flesh" was mere temporary scraping. If that was right I guess there'd be no archaeological record, or would there?
It would be a very delicate analysis. Actually, that thought might conceivably mean the Channel 4 nonsense was truly vandalistic. Who knows what analysis techniques might be available one day.
