It's worth noting that although the stone run along the road for quite a few miles, their style varies enormously.

IMO a few do indeed 'look' like the 'real deal' http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/image.php?image_id=5998. Some look (as I said on the original thread) kinda like the allegedly iron age Long Tom on Fyfield Down. Others look much more modern & 'tooled' (inc the ones with the holes).

I reckon they are waymarkers NOW (whether the older ones always were, I couldn't say) & the stones are of massively varying antiquity.

What the holes are 'for'? No ideas here I'm afraid. 'Keep left' signs? LOL!
