A gnomon casts a shadow whereas 2 gnomons with holes in them cast narrow shafts of light and are much more of a precision instrument.
I'm surprised you haven't built a large scale mjysterious solstice light box out of stone. The Arts Council would be suckers for it if you gave them the right chat. It would be the talk of the Islington dinner tables. ;)
