Here is my reply from the National Trust, received today.
Thank you for your email regarding Cherhill Down which has been
passed to me by Margaret Cornick for reply.
I was sorry to hear that your membership to the National Trust
was cancelled when you discovered the Trust had accepted money
from channel 4 to use Uffington White Horse.
Regarding the White Horse on Cherhill Down I can confirm that
the National Trust does not own this - however, the Parish
Council of Cherhill own and maintain it. Most of the
surrounding downland is owned and cared for by the National
Trust and this is a rather wild and beautiful place which we
would not wish to see transformed by commercial activities.
The Trust recognises that the cost of caring for the White Horse
has been born by the Parish Council, which has recently carried
out major restoration work. We fully understand the Parish's
need to seek the funds it requires, and support it's decision to
allow a very temporary 'stunt' to change the appearance of the
Horse without physical damage.
I would like to thank you for taking the time to write to us
regarding this issue and please note that your comments have
been noted.
