"human right abuses, animal rights abuses, environmental abuses"

We still have a ways to go there, too..

It's easy to forget that China only really just within our lifetime reached the point in their history that we went thru over a hundred years ago. They are learning and changing as they interact with the world.

China largely isolated itself for MILLENNIA..... that has a lot to do with its problems. The wall is coming down, and the Chinese learn more about other ways of thinking. That brings up LANGUAGE, which is deeply connected to how these things manifest... its syntax is a factor in cultural views, and the syntax is very different from western languages.

Better to keep opening China up to the world, I think. Having them get isolationist would just create military frictions.

Oh come on Dave. Surely it's a matter of proportion ? The impact of China re. polution, child labour, capital punishment, censorship, endangered species, whaling, Tibet, skinning live cats and dogs to make a purses etc& etc.

There is no comparison at all when you are talking about those degrees of extreme. That's just giving them a get out. There is no Mea Culpa here.
