But that's just the way things are. Denied a political voice, people take things into their own hands. Vonnegut was commenting on the Race Riots in 60's America, but you could equally look at something like Toxteth in 1981.

Ultimately, if people aren't being listened to, what should they do? Sit at home and take what they are given like good little proles?

No, but how do you actually know for sure that some of those involved re the Xmas tree burn down wern't just arseholes looking for an excuse to riot? It's a Xmas Tree FFS!
I don't think the two things even compare at all.
It actually demeans the importance of what he was writing about.
The town he was writing about was probably burned down as a sign of unity.
I mean try having a go at some government property if you REALLY mean it.
People 'out Xmas shopping are an easier targert though, eh?
