Folk Radio UK - Winter Solstice Mix by Michael Tanner
https://soundcloud.com/folk-radio-uk/winter-solstice-mix-by-michael
Wonderful, featuring many a Tabor, Collins, Waterson, Carthy, Prior and the sweetest Deller...
My favourite is Steve Ashley's "Candlemas Carol"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dno_pqAjJ8
because I'm a nut for major/minor and also for recorders, flutes and whistles.

Fair Folk Podcast
The "Iceland" show. Well researched and presented folk music radio programme by a Canadian woman. I'm fascinated by how old a lot of the music sounds, putting you in mind of plainchant etc. Also, I'm intrigued about the reasons for the performance style of Rímur ('sung' epic poems) as explained/claimed in an interview during the programme. The poems are to be sung A capella by a lone singer, only within a range of about four tones. So there are no harmonies and melodies or sounds from other voices or instruments to distract the listener. Yet these poems can by 1,000 stanzas long - they say here that they've performed shorter versions of 300 stanzas for concerts of an hour and a half. I think the rímur must have been kept in this primitve form to enchant and 'drug' the Icelanders through their harsh winters.
https://soundcloud.com/fairfolkcast/iceland
Edit - but it's more likely that it's because the Icelanders seem/ed to put great import onto keeping their language and heritage 'pure' from outside influence and changes. I have heard that Icelandic as a language is still quite close to the original old Norse.

Folklore Tapes - all of them from this channel
https://soundcloud.com/folklore-tapes/dftiv-rituals-practices
An interesting mix which flows pleasingly and eerily through experimental folk music, sounds, stories, poems.

and finally, last night's bedtime story -
"The Children Of Green Knowe"

The TV adaptation from the 80s is very good, too. It's on Youtube.

Man - Back Into the Future
Just started reading Rhinos Winos and Lunatics. I think I might be listening to a lot of Man over the next week or two.

The Meters - Very Best Of
Sam and Dave - The Best Of

Il Balletto Di Bronzo - Ys
Put onto this fabulous prog album by John Westhaver from The Band Whose Name Is A Symbol on his very fine radio show:
http://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/117/info.html

Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

Julian Cope - Drunken Songs
Funny in parts and good hearted, but I find this pretty underwhelming for the most part I'm afraid.

Vinyl:

Pigs Pigs Pigs PigsPigs Pigs Pigs - Feed the Rats
Proper rock. Simple but genius, the riff returns. Absolutely love it. Ace cover too.

Joe Gibbs - African Dub All-Mighty
One of the all time greatest dub albums, with a totally iconic cover.

Ike and Tina Turner - Tough Enough
My, Tina was a complete force of nature back then, a whirlwind of energy and power. Here she is in an abusive relationship with Ike, and she's singing songs with him about women in abusive relationships...

Necro Deathmort - EP1, EP3
Picked these up for peanuts in the Distraction Records sale (I think, sadly, they may be closing for business). EP1 is interesting, but pretty harsh on the ears in places. EP3 on the other hand is a whole lot more listenable, without losing an out-there edge. Some lovely electronic sounds on here. I will give EP1 more of a chance btw - I've only had the one listen so may be jumping to conclusions.

Main replays this week:

The Primitives - Spin-O-Rama
Still catching up on 2014. This is ace. Their Velvets-60sGirlGroup-with-a-J&MC-twist thing still sounds great, in fact this is better than some of their original albums and at a little over 29 minutes can't outstay its welcome. Particularly liking "Lose The Reason"

David Sylvian - There's A Light That Enters Houses With No Other House In Sight
Almost the complete antithesis of the Prims. One track, 64 minutes long, US-accented spoken word sections over that kind of slow-improv thing he's been getting into in the last decade, telling an oblique tale of drunken dissolution and poetry, possibly. Didn't think I'd really get into this, but with each play it's burrowed a little deeper and actually the 64 minutes seems much less. Worth the effort.

Tricky - Adrian Thaws
Good mix of moody electronica and the kind of vocal pairings he made sound so good on Maxinquaye, coupled with some full on angry UK hip-hop. Not going to win new fans I think, but plenty here for those already in.

Otherwise:

David Bowie - I Dig Everything: The 1966 Pye Singles

David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World

The Fall - Early

The Fall - Grotesque

OMD - Architecture & Morality
The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour
The Fall - Perverted By Language
The Fall - 458489A and B
Pet Shop Boys - Please

The Fall - "Free Range" and "Behind The Counter" CD singles

Arthur & Martha - Music For Hairproducts EP

David Bowie - The Next Day/The Next Day Extra
Vesuvio - Vesuvio

Slomo - Transits. Loving this. More kosmiche than earlier albums, though still plenty of lo-end rumblings. Bit of a gem I reckon.

Kleefstra/Bakker/Kleefstra - Desimber. Took a punt on this as I really like the Tombed Vision cassette label and it's another ambient gem. Two guitars and effects plus poetry in Friesian (not sure if I've spelt that correctly). Both tracks are over 30mins long and not much happens but the atmosphere and mood is marvelous.

Julian Cope - Drunken Songs. Didn't like this at first but it's grown on me (except the track with accordion because I really don't like accordion). None of the tracks would make a double cd compilation of 21st century Cope for me but I like the tunes and it's great to have a lighthearted (Skellington?) Cope album. Road to Tralee is not unlike Armenian Genocide (if you replace Christians being marched to their death with two blokes getting pissed on a bus on their way to Tralee!). Most of the tunes have been in my head the last couple of days so can't be bad.

Roly Porter - Third Law
Roger Goula - Overview Effect

Two excellent albums that are still on heavy rotation!

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – Feed The Rats. More 90s noise rock-influenced niceness here, pretty much what you’d get if you chucked Sabbath, Motorhead and Hawkwind into the proverbial blender, and set it to ‘liquidise’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th4gnbSFjU4

All Them Witches – Sleeping Through The War. Another thoughtful slab of metallic psych/blues from this increasingly classy act, music coming from the metaphorical deep south of the USA (as opposed to the real one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58BsI4PC1Lg

Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2 – Star Stuff. Despite the ludicrous name, these boys sure can play – again, it’s a very American sound, but this time there’s a kind of West Coast/fusion vibe to it, albeit with modern production values. Think Gabor Szabo meets DJ Shadow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blz2IpGR1Sg (this track isn’t actually that representative of the album as a whole…)

Kairon; IRSE! – Ruination. However, winner this week of the most ridiculous ‘moniker’ is these guys. Alright, they’re from Finland, but there’s no excuse for this amount of punctuation in a name. One of those frustrating albums where one minute it’s “ooh, I quite like this!” to the next “hmmm, this isn’t so good”. It’s basically prog metal with one foot in the 70s, the other in the 90s and beyond. Definitely worth checking if you’re into this kind of stuff, as there are some cracking parts, but otherwise liable to make your eyes roll to the back of your head: https://soundcloud.com/svart-records/04-starik (having said all that, I can’t get this bleedin’ riff out of my head)

Lamagaia – s/t. Superior space rock wig-out from Sweden. Again, if you like blah blah blah… https://lamagaia.bandcamp.com/album/s-t

VA – English Weather. Thank you to whoever posted about this the other week on Unsung, it’s the Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs curated early 70s psych/prog comp, and it is absolutely lovely. T2’S ‘JLT’ followed by Bill Fay’s ‘Til The Christ Come Back’ is just inspired, but there’s loads of other great stuff on this, much of which I hadn’t heard before. Great, informed sleevenotes too – pretty much an essential package: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XfntqG9m4E

Krause – 2am Thoughts. Suited my mood earlier this week, pissed off and frustrated…

D-Generation – Entropy In The UK EP. Cultural theorist and music writer Mark Fisher killed himself the other week after a long struggle with depression – he’s the bloke who wrote Capitalist Realism and Ghosts Of My Life, both of which I think have been mentioned here before. Sad news obviously, but one nugget that arose from the obits was his involvement in this mid-90s psych-dance EP, which I bought at the time, primarily because it was promoted (in retrospect) along hauntological lines, and includes various Moorcock references (and cleverly samples John Lydon’s famous “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated”). Not amazing, but still interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIRE67S7Ydg

Pink Fairies – Never Never Land. Not sure if I’ve ever properly heard this before, actually much better than I expected, particularly like the way that the version here of ‘Uncle Harry’s Last Freakout’ is just straining to turn into ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog’ towards the end.

Listen With Father:

Danielle Dax – Dark Adapted Eye. A confirmed favourite with the girls.

B is for…

The Black Dog – Spanners. Like many people I suspect of a similar age and trajectory, I have quite a few Artificial Intelligence-type CDs in my collection from around the first half of the 90s, most of which haven’t been played since that time. Along with Aphex and Autechre, these guys were often identified as one of the prime movers on the scene, with their wacky computer art sleeves and obsession with Egyptology… I listened to about half of this before deciding that going to bed was the sensible option. It’s not bad by any means, and in places it still sounds pretty great eg. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuWjYCExrik, but boy is it wearing when listened to at any length, the programming wizardry generally getting in the way of either melodic development or simple excitement.

Live:

Machiine / The Eskimo Chain, The Shacklewell Arms, Dalston

Arranging to meet a friend, he suggested this free gig as a venue, so wasn’t expecting too much. However, while the headliners were some shouty electro garage tosh (yes, they’d heard of Fat White Family), The Eskimo Chain (bands, please make an effort to come up with better names for yourselves) were actually pretty good, like a harder-edged Clinic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rew7CcFKZx4

No much this week...in no particular order

Circle - Alotus

Bauhaus - Press The Eject...

Various - I'm A Freak Baby
Some of the tracks on this sound sooo cheesy, but I kinda love em' for it.

P.I.L. - Rise/ Metal Box 4CD reissues
I really gotta stop buying P.I.L. I've got far too much replicated, but something 'new' gets released, and I just seem to acquire them. Almost by osmosis.

Bowie - Nothing Has Changed

John Carpenter - Lost Themes / Lost Themes II

Aqua Nebula Oscillators - Friday 13th (Live)

The Men - Devil Music
Return to (post) punk grungy raucousness of first two albums. Good stuff, though vinyl only????

That be it. Take care!
