Something that i have been listening to a bit, and that i would like to bring to people's attention is Anais Mitchell's Hadestown. It is a conceptual piece about orpheus and persephone and all that shit. Amazing. Been out for a couple of years, but i keep returning to it. On a similar theme, Jah Wobble's Return to Hades is to coin a phrase, haunting. And i didn't mind The new adaptation of The Clash of the Titans at all. I think there is going to be a sequel!

I've found these pages a good source of new music so I thought I'd stop being quite so lazy and share a few suggestions ….

Mark Fry and the A. Lords – I Lived in Trees. Latest release on the very wonderful Second Language label. Mark Fry (him of Dreaming with Alice fame), Michael Tanner and Nick Palmer have produced a beautiful evocation of the lost English summers of our childhood and maybe even the lost summers of our dreams. Disturbingly, the Sun (the tabloid not the star) likes it ...

Headphone Commute - podcast of tracks from the Time Released Sound label.
Ambient, atmospheric, filmic. http://reviews.headphonecommute.com/2011/10/11/mix-hc-time-released-sound/

Neu! - Neu! 2

Neu! - Neu! '76 = definitely my favourite

Ladytron - Gravity The Seducer = a bit disappointed with this, definitely not their finest hour

The Fall - In Palace Of Swords Reversed = '80 to '83 compilation, when they really beginning to hit their stride

Big Deal - Lights Out

Kira Willey - Dance For The Sun (Yoga Songs For Kids) = fucking ace stuff

The Whip - Wired Together = not much of an advancement made on the first album, with nothing as good as 'Trash' on here

:o)

Volapük - Le Feu Du Tige
Something that's been sitting waiting for me to listen to it for a while. A random play on shuffle got me running this a few times. Weirdy mid-90s french album featuring lots of classical instruments in a rocky way. The obvious training of the players leads to some horrible j***y moments that has this verging on p**g. But, at best it's like a collaboration between Zappa and the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.Of the 14 tracks there's a goods 8 track LP. Unfortunately, that means cutting some in half not just out

Excepter - Ka
Similarly. Erm, yeah. Another one that's been sitting in my peripheral vision for some time. Some of this is out and out awful. Some of it like sketches by Holy Fuck. But, it's kept me going back to it. So there must be something going on

Half Man Half Biscuit - 90 BiSoDol (Crimond)

Bong - Beyond Ancient Space: I think this is stunning. Went to see them on Friday in a Stoke Newington church and bought the cd there. Its subtitled 'Unsere Kosmiche Musik' and that's spot on. Heavy drone but the 'sitar' (it's not a sitar but can't remember the name of the instrument), Loopian (shimmering) guitar, and great rhythm section make this a v trippy affair; great for headphones in the dark, yet also danceable!

Emeralds - Does it Look Like I'm Here: first LP I've heard by them. I like it but perhaps there's just too much going on, more space would be good.

Barn Owl - Lost in the glare
Half Man Half Biscuit - 90 Bisodol (Crimond)
Brain Donor - Love Peace and Fuck (Rock on!)

Probably been more but mind blown by the Bong!

Tracks

Veronica Falls - Found Love in a Graveyard
The Chills - Pink Frost
Gene Clark - No Other / Assorted tracks
Jah Wobble & Julie Campbell - Tightrope
John Zorn - The Eternals

Jonny Kearney & Lucy Farrell - Kite
Lucy has the sweetest English voice and Jonny writes terrific songs and Adrian McNally of Unthanks fame produces with hints of Tom Waits and Robert Wyatt.

Nick Lowe - The Old Magic
Title says it all, no more, no less. I Read Alot is my favourite track.

Patti Smith - Outside Society
I never thought of Patti Smith as “a singer”. I suppose it’s ‘cause when she first emerged it was as a poet/artist and her involvement in music was almost as ‘outsider art’. But by the time she gets to People Have The Power she’s right up there with Grace Slick. Note: Gloria is not to be played loud on a car stereo on the M1 when you’re trying to keep to the speed limit. Quick, flick to Nick Lowe and settle back into the slow lane.

Manes - first 2 demos
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels...
Dodheimsgard - Supervillain Outcast
The Fall - Slates
Taake - Nattestid...
