Officially The Most Stressful Day of The Year at work today so starting the day as best I can:
In Vinyland:
Hawkwind - Hall of The Mountain Grill
Inner City Unit - The Maximum Effect
Inner City Unit - Blood and Bone

From the West Country:
The Heads: Tilburg
Blue Aeroplanes: Beatsongs
Weird Shit
The incomperable Rita Lynch(now playing in the above - not in The Heads): Good Advice. Easily the CD of last year to my ears. Apparently available from the Blue Aeroplanes' website.

I've been listening to this wicked compilation called Absolution which was one of the first cd's i ever bought, and in many cases was the first introduction to all these bands. Particularly appealing to those that like alternative/gothy rock. Here is the track listing (i don't think it is available anymore)
The Cure - Never Enough
The Mission - Deliverance
Killing Joke - Love like Blood
The Wonder Stuff - Don't let me down gently
Echo & the Bunnymen - The Cutter
Siouxsie & the Banshees - Spellbound
Gene Loves Jezabel - Heartache
Bauhaus - Ziggy Stardust
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Some Candy Talking
All About Eve - Martha's Harbour
The Stranglers - European Female
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
The Psychedelic Furs - Love my way
The Creatures - Miss the Girl
The Damned - Eloise
The Ramones - Baby I love you
Fields of the Nephilim - Moonchild

Magazine - Real Life Demos
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest / Yellow House
David Bowie - Station To Station
Siouxsie & Banshees - A kiss in the dreamhouse (Remastered)
Cluster & Eno - Cluster & Eno
Brickwerk - Empty Bottle, Dusty Road
Iggy Pop - The Idiot

After the stressful day mentioned above i spent yesterday listening to:
Agitation Free - Malesch
Agitation Free - 2nd
Agitation Free - At the Cliffs of the River Rhine
Agitation Free - Last
cos i was feeling free from agitation. And they all sounded mighty fine.

Automat : 'Automat'
V/A: 'Artificial Faces: Mutant Freak-a-delic Sounds For The Now Psych Generation!'
The Emperor Machine: 'Space Beyond The Egg'
V/A: 'RVNG Presents Mx7: Purple Brain'
David Bowie: 'Low'
Earth: 'The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull'

Waldron, Stapleton, Sigmarsson, Haynes, Faulhaber - The Sleeping Moustache
Fans of NWW/Irr. App (ext) will like this dizzying collaboration very much.
Ennio Morricone - Crime and Dissonance
Rare and varied film soundtrack gems compiled by Mike Patton
Jaw-droppingly magnificent in places.
David Bowie - Hunky Dory / Diamond Dogs / Low
Buzzcocks - Time's Up
Solid Eye - Fruits Of Automation
Very recommended for anyone into NWW, Residents etc.

Genesis - Trespass
Extremely unhip listening matter for most folk around here, but an album from my early teens which I still really like today, there's just something about those wintery sounding 12-string guitars that always gets to me.
The main reason I dug it out, was it featured a man on drums named John Mayhew, I'd read in one of the music mags that he died on March 26th in Glasgow— two days before his birthday — from a heart-related condition. He was 61. R.I.P.
Various - Hallucinations: Psychedelic Pop Nuggets from the WEA Vaults
One of my favourite psyche comps in recent years
Parking Non-Stop - Species Corridor
Relaxing experimental pop from unsung North Walian trio, they also have a great knack of utilising interesting location recordings as part of their cleverly honed tracks.

Damenbart - Impressionen '71
Work of genius from the H.N.A.S. men that originated as a lost krautrock spoof, but really does stand up in it's own right.
Black Dice - Creature Comforts / Load Blown
Young Marble Giants - Colossal Youth
Thomas Leer & Robert Rental - The Bridge
Having been abroad for most of the week - firstly on the Amalfi coast, then in Naples - I haven't had much time to listen intently to music, but here's a selection of what's been churning away on my I-Pod during the holiday:
The Horrors - Primary Colours
A mixed bag for me. Instrumentally it's pretty top notch - I like the FX-laden MBVesque wall of guitar noise, and the songwriting is strong throughout, but the vocals can sometimes sound irritatingly mannered (a common problem amongst the English '80s alternative bands they seem to revere, like The Cure and the Psychedelic Furs). Needless to say, "Sea Within a Sea" is the high point, but "Mirror's Image", "Who Can Say", "Scarlet Fields" and the title track are good too. If they continue to improve at this rate, their fourth LP will be a masterpiece.
Cornelius - Sensuous
I'd always regarded this as his most clinical and least inspired LP, but having listened to it on a beach in blazing 90 degree heat it takes on a most appealing soporofic languor that I'd previously mistaken for muso blandness. Which brings me to...
David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name
Soporific languor doesn't get any better than this (except for the more urgent Crazy Horse-like "Cowboy Movie" and the trite anti-Nixon call-to-arms "What are Their Names".) The fact the every musician residing in or around the San Francisco Bay Area at this time seems to have made at least one guest appearance on it only adds to its Bohemian charm. Some darned beautiful tunes, to boot.
Caetano Veloso - Sem Lenco , Sem Documento (The Best Of...)
Excellent compilation that runs from the Tropicalia era through to the mid-80s (although it inexplicably omits his best-known song, "London, London" - still, there's always the Pirate Bay). "Shy Moon" in particular is perfect for those late Mediterrenean evenings when you've drunk too much wine, smoked too much dope and been bitten by 1,567 mosquitos in the space of an hour and a half.
T.Rex : The Best of...
This is actually the best of Tyrannosaurus Rex, but it holds its own as a decent compilation provided you ignore the misleading title (obviously designed to cash in on Marc's newfound teen idol status at the start of the '70s). It's a shame it doesn't include "Do You Remember", though, as it's my favourite of Bolan's pre-"Electric Warrior" compositions.
Also mentioned in dispatches:
The Beach Boys - Sunflower
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother (their last decent album, in my opinion)
Arnaldo Baptista - Loki (Brazil's equivalent of "The Madcap Laughs" or "Oar").
Can - Future Days
Various Artists - Trojan UK Hits Box Set

Soundtrack to my annual Shetland jaunt:
Clive Gregson & Christine Collister 'Mischief' - unusually ascerbic collection of Gregsongs slightly dated in sound but high on quality;
The Fall 'Dragnet' - after playing this I chanced upon Marc Riley in Lerwick's excellent Lounge Bar alongside the singer out of Elbow. Surreal, huh? Great record though, despite having the worst production ever;
Black Sabbath 'Born Again' - unfairly maligned Gillan platter with some ace songs, especially 'Zero The Hero';
Drude 'Black Sheep' - our man with fire in his belly and a sting in his tail. Beltin' gear;
George Harrison 'Let It Roll' - decent best of, though I'd've sacrificed the copout live versions of Beatles songs and the godawful 'Got My Mind Set On You' for better tracks from 'Dark Horse' or 'Living In The Material World', both sadly under represented here;
Soft Heap 'Soft Heap' - sadly disappointing set where the whole is well short of the sum of its parts. Remember all four of its late players better elsewhere;
Fairport Convention 'Unhalfbricking' - maudlin and
magnificent third LP from the classic line up.
That's me. Have a great week, all.

White Hills - Heads on Fire
The vinyl version arrived last Friday and it has been stuck to my turntable ever since. ROCK!
Nadja - Radiance of Shadows
Brooding and brilliant.
Madness - The Liberty of Norton Folgate
Got this for Will Squidling, who is a big fan of de nutty chaps. I'm glad I did because I think it is fab. It has been making me quite emotional hearing them playing such decent quality new stuff again after all these years.
AC/DC - Bonfire
Boxset from library. Love the Atlantic Studios live set - raw and rockin'! Don't know why they've randomly included Back in Black with the set though...
The Heads - Tilburg
JC - Unruly Imagination
Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
THE AFFECTIONATE PUNCH – Associates
PEEL SESSION – Bourgie Bourgie
LOVE IS THE WAVE 7” – Crystal Stilts
Really good recent single. Very JAMC!
S/T – The Grails
Really good on initial plays. Good opening track, Natural Man reminds me of some old soundtrack number that I can’t quite name at the moment, and Silk Rd is especially great. The only number I’m not that keen at the moment is Acid Rain which sounds uncomfortably like some Pink Floyd yawnfest to these ears, but otherwise...yeah!
PRIMARY COLOURS – The Horrors
SOMETHING CAME UP – Mekon
Includes guests like Alan Vega, Marc Almond, Roxanne Shante, etc.
TOMORROW TODAY – Seeland
Definitely one of my fave albums this year.
JUMP START SHUT OUT 7” - Stereolab
THE EARTH TAVERN 7/2/78 – Television
Rough and ready recording, but great performances. Thanks, Mr!
KNOWLE WEST BOY – Tricky
I've been playing this loads of late. Past Mistake is fab. Take away the big 80’s drums and you are left with an almost Joy Division-like melancholia. It’s like an The Eternal for the noughties.
VARIOUS A&B-SIDES – T.Rex
Great to hear the likes of Thunderwing and Jitterbug Love again on my ipod. Solid Gold Easy Action now sounds almost like an early punk single. I must have been in the mood for Bolan because even Truck On (Tyke) – one of my least fave T.Rex 45’s – sounded truly great!

The Rubinoos- S/T. Classic power pop!
Astra- The Weirding. Still a bit too much muso pomp for me, but enjoyable nonetheless.
Ian Hunter- Overnight Angels. Woah! Loving this! Much maligned for it's 'everything louder than everything else' production, but this is an OTT late glam masterpiece, ridiculous and wonderful in equal measures.
Mott the Hoople- The Hoople. They were kind of falling apart by this time, weren't they? Still a good album, but Mick Ralph is missed.
V/A- Drive In, Turn On, Freak Out. Another ace comp on Finders Keepers.
Andy Nice- The Secrets of Me. Lovely cello instrumentals, then a crappy vocal number at the end.
The Faint- The Fascination. They've passed their peak, but this is still better than most of the trendy electro pop kicking around these days.
The Present- The Way We Are. Excellent second LP from Animal Collective collaborator Rusty Santos, especially the 32 minute title track. Steve Reich and Popul Vuh spring to mind.
Oskar- LP2. A mixed bag of experimental studio noodlings.
Balaam and the Angel- Sun Family, Live Free or Die. Do we like them best as moody goths or 80s hard rockers? Me and the girlfriend can't decide, so we end up listening to-
The Cult- Love. They're playing it live at the Albert Hall in October, apparently...

listen for yourself
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZULO1I32
improv guitar type thing
also his new book is rather good, laughed out loud 3 times, though admittedly one was the thought of Delphic Vapours being used as a form of entertainment for the Botley ladies
plus a shitload of Bong/Basillica/Masterslave etc Newcastle doom/drone mightiness in excelsis
probably more but I can't remember off the top of my head
Poulenc's piano concerto did it for me.
