now that sounds great. bogs and wildlife and water and fresh air. maybe some otters? Mr Rh has been nagging me that we should go. This year - but when do we need to avoid the notorious midges?

July and August worst time....stay away from water, they'll eat ya alive!

Last year was great , very dry which killed them off to a great extent . It would be too much to expect the same again this year . First week in June can see the start . The entire west coast from Kintyre -Durness is good for otter spotting .

Rhiannon,

In my experience, the only time to guarantee avoiding the dreaded midge is between October and May inclusive. Mind you, with the warm winter we've had, that may no longer apply.
I've heard that the old Highland clans had a way of dealing with criminals - they tied them to a stake, in a bog, and naked, leaving them to the mercy of the midge. Most were driven mad. Imagine that, eh?
