Stannon

circle or cairn

close

With ARCHI and on the Portal this is down at SX126800 as a stone circle but ArchSearch says the stone circle is a Bronze Age cairn and gives a very different position of SX13408095 with the alternative name of Dinnever Hill . At that grid reference it also shows 2 Bronze Age cairns as Stannon Down .
So 1) is Stannon really a stone circle in and of itself ?
2) are the Stannon Down cairns at the Archsearch location ?

The Stannon Circle is at the 126800 position, no doubt about that. The two cairns at the other grid Ref are two small groups of stones to the south of Louden circle.
Dinnever Hill is the high point south of Stannon, according to the map there are also two cairns there Can,t help you on what from they take as I have not visited them.

As Mr H says, there is definately a stone circle at SX126800, known as 'Stannon Stone Circle' (unless my compass reading, and everyone else's, was way off track).

The SX13408095 grid ref is actually located on the west side of Louden Hill, right next to the China Clay works. In general, there are amazing scaterings of old settlements in that area.
