you are right in what you say. here in the americas though, there is a strong oral and cultural tradition explaining some of these solar sightings. and, the hopi still practice the tradition..
remember america is only 400 years out of the stone age on the east coast and only 200 years out of the stone age in the western interior.

it is sort of like the austrailian aboriginees who still have songs that describe the major landmarks on footpaths that cross the continent.
