Ey Bob, just looking at the text on your profile. I reckon the nearest site with a bit of decent 'Wow!' factor is Duddo:

It's a bit of a hike up the way, but more than worth it. Also well placed for a quick side trip to the Roughting Linn carvings on the way back to the A1.

If you're not after 'Wow!' but want closest site where there's something to see (unlike Copt Hill just past Penshaw), I think it's the Hartley stone:

Was at Penshaw monument yesterday and you can see where quarrying has taken place. Not able to find the burial mound. Did not realise you could walk round into where the bikes go.
I did not realise you can see that far on a clear day.
No evidence what so ever.
