Crannog excavation

close

Back in the early 1930s Ballinderry Crannog (Co Westmeath) was excavated. Recently the evidence was reassessed : http://www.ria.ie/cgi-bin/ria/papers/100218.pdf

It's 10th Century, so a bit out of timeline for TMA per se, but it's very interesting reading. Love the pictures on pages 10 & 11 for instance.

It is also very good to see old excavations being revisited.

Yeah its good to see excavation report actually making
it to print. The pics on those pages are great. Hencken
knew how to make sure he left no stone unturned, and this
is true for the total excavation of Cahercommaun on the
Burren. Mind you he released his report in 1938 only
two years after the dig.The whole thing was re-evaluated
under the Western stone fort project by the Discovery
programme. He had good pics with his report as well,
also the re evaluation threw up a few interesting points
that he may had missed. Such was his extensive
excavation and field reports, there was no need to re-dig
anything.
