I'm probably showing my ignorance here, but having never used (alright - or even ever seen, dammit!) any of the existing Irish maps, how do they compare, detail-wise, with those of the UK OS maps?

I know these mentioned are only 1:50000, but no doubt 1:25000 will surely follow.

I only ask, cos the French 25k ones I bought recently - while OK and perfectly readable - don't seem as detailed as our good old OS ones!

Unless it's just cos I'm so used to them that I find them a lot easier to read...

Ummm. I'd be the opposite - no regular experience of the UK maps, but what I have seen does seem to be comparable in detail level to the Irish series.

I just checked my profile above and of the 30 sites I've added, 4 (I think)weren't marked on the map. One other that I haven't got around to posting. Obviously this would be a poor sample because the bulk of the 'main' sites would have been posted before I first contributed and mine would be the lesser known, more obscure.

The stand-out feature for antiquarians is the red dot on green/brown background, that Fourwinds mentions above.

Of course, what you're used to often seems the best, doesn't it?

The French ones are pretty poor aren't they. I have this fantasy that I'm a multi billionaire who pays for the British OS guys to map the entire globe. The only maps that compare in detail and readability are the Danish ones

The Irish OS maps are in two sets - Irish & Northern Irish

The NI maps use really bright colours for the different heights of contour and are a bit bright.

The OSI maps are pretty spot on. Detail-wise they are as good as the UK 50K maps. The OSI was established by the Brits back in 1839 and it's probably one of the only benefits of the occupation.

Of course, they only produced the OS maps so that they could move the troops around ....

Spanish OS maps are crap !!!!
