The OSI are about to produce a new set of maps for Ireland. The details are:

1:50000
Each map will be 40km x 40km with no overlaps
68 maps instead of 89
Double sided printing
No more Irish Grid References - moving to ITM (Irish Transverse Mercator, a version of UTM)

The move is being made because the algorithm used to plot Irish Grid References is not exactly GPS friendly and loses accuracy at various points due to a difference in the compensation for the earth's curvature (I think).

Yes ... a new set of maps to buy!!! I will be displaying ITM coordinates alongside the Grid Refs on megalithomania shortly.

Just had a glance over at your website - wonderful photos of Kilgowen stone.

An interesting read in the Dáil report, at the bottom of the page, as well. Happy ending of a sort, though a fair amount of damage was already done.

I'm probably showing my ignorance here, but having never used (alright - or even ever seen, dammit!) any of the existing Irish maps, how do they compare, detail-wise, with those of the UK OS maps?

I know these mentioned are only 1:50000, but no doubt 1:25000 will surely follow.

I only ask, cos the French 25k ones I bought recently - while OK and perfectly readable - don't seem as detailed as our good old OS ones!

Unless it's just cos I'm so used to them that I find them a lot easier to read...
