Thanks for that stuff Bawn. I was very dubious about the site but I guess this vaildates it in a small way. I have the Dames book but found it tedious. I remember now its mention of Bohernabreena.
The blather.net piece is good. I've been thinking of buying that Haunted Dublin book for a while now but what with the recession etc.

I read the first paragraph of the the story of Da Derga Hostel and the first thing I thought of was comets.

Could be that the Hostel was an observatory and that what is being described is a comet, something similar to the thesis in the book The Celtic Gods; comets in Irish Mythology.
