I think you've hit the nail on the head. There was too much supposition about how they died (e.g. scenes of torch-lit group watching the killing) , and on top of that every time they mentioned an injury they felt the need to accompany it with a flash frame of someone inflicting it. That's just an insult to the viewer.

If someone on screen says, "he was hit with a large blunt object", I don't need any further explanation. This isn't feckin' Playschool. We know what 'large blunt object' means, and I'm sure we can guess the kind of gurgling noises that the human body makes when struck with one.
