Lhwyd had written about Newgrange RA in 1699 ,plus some of the designs look like this may be a genuine case of somebody carving rocks whils out of their skull as they are at least different from the usual stuff . I'll go for laudunum for the rev . rather than fungi .

Iirc, about then, a new and dangerous dodgy substance that was getting people whacked out of their skulls was the dreaded demon caffeine!

But we should be careful with such thinking, else we'll be accused of Desperately Seeking Trance Plants :)
