origin of name?

close

Perhaps if rdavymed reads this: Why has this barrow got such a strange name? Is it what it's called locally? I saw caves near swanage called 'Tilly Whim' but that surely can't be connected. Just wondering.

Hey Rhiannon

Tilly Whim Caves near Swanage were originally opened on land owned by a Joseph Tilly. A Whim was an old crane that was used to transport the quarried stone into barge ships at the bottom of the cliffs. The cranes used to be a bit of an eyesore along the coast and the caves became known because of this.

Hope that helps!

I must confess, I don't know the origin of the name. A chap in a pick up truck stopped whilst I took the photo. He seemed fairly knowledgable of the local monuments (suggesting a few I should try, etc) and it was he who told me the name. I must confess, I didn't ask why. In hindsight perhaps I should have done.
