Hill of Allen

Hill of Allen

close

There is a lot of myth and legend attached to the Hill of Allen, it is called the birthplace of Fionn MacCumhail and the god Nuada built a white walled palace on it. Its not really a sacred hill but seems to have a dominating presence in the area. It was called the Island of Allen because it is surrounded by the bog of allen. It is also know as Almu. It has amazing views of the plains around into the curragh and the bog of allen. Fionn MacCumhail is meant to have throw Punchestown Standing Stone from here. I seem to remember reading somewhere as well that the tower folly built on top of it used a wedge tomb for its foundations but I havent been able to find I reference for this again.
So what category do i place the hill under?

Sacred Hill covers all the bases, you can add any 'sub-sites' later

I was at the hill in Nov. 2005 and the damage was awful. I came from the states with some friends to show them the hill. As a young man I read of Finn and the fianna. After telling my friends about the hill and its mythic history...what a sock to see the terrible damage! Why has not the irish goverment of EU made it a historic site?
