Newtown, Powys

close

Hi All,

Tomorrow I am going to visit friends in Newtown, Powys, for the weekend. Could anyone recommend some visually appealing sites in the area, please? There will be cars, so we can travel a little further afield, which is nice.

Many thanks,

Apparently there's a big stone in a churchyard there (no idea which one). I've not visited it yet, but it's in one of the Chris Barber books. Sorry, I'm short of time, and my copies are at home. Perhaps Rhiannon can help.

Kind of depends how much further afield your willing to go. If you can pop over Dollgellau sort of way (old county of Merionedd) there's a cracking mountain called Cadair Idris with the most stunning set of lakes at Llynnau Gregennan. Stones dotted around near it too. Theres pretty good info on TMA. Dollgellau could take a bit over an hour from Newtown, mind you, think it depends how you drive!! And of course, if I'm thinking of the right Newtown, could of got things arse about face as usual!!.

Have fun though, very jealous.

Montgomery has a castle, which is free to get into:

as well as a hillfort:

and don't forget Offa's Dyke is all over the place, as is Wantyn's Dyke.

and of course (all of this stuff is 10-15 miles east of Newtown on the A489), there is always Mitchells Fold stone circle:

you can always have a walk on the Severn river path as it goes thru Newtown

I second elderford`s nomination of Mitchell`s Fold stone circle:

as you will probably be passing within a few miles of it on your way to/from Newtown.

The Hoarstones stone circle is just up the road from Mitchell`s Fold, too:
