Hi thelma,

sounds like one of my mum's dogs might get shot one day then! They are not exactly famous for their respect for boundaries. I did mention Moss and yourself to my mum quite a few months ago and she certainly knew who I meant.

It's so interesting to find out more about Lansdown - I hope to get back there one day.

best wishes, martin

Lansdown "sun disc". Note ", this is because no one is quite sure. Found in 1911, its gold on top of bronze, dated to about 13th/12th bc and is 17.25cm diameter. Bath's roman deity is Minerva- goddess of intelligence, crafts etc. Its celtic deity is Sulis, can't find much information on him but something to do with water. The sun disc is probably from germany, and I believe went back to a museum there for dating -1984, I think it is the bottom of something, plate/bowl? Rhiannons drawing is a good copy and I would say without doubt the disc has something to do with the sun
My interest is actually in the landscape just recording the stones for posterity. Somerset landscape is fascinating and has a lot of strange shaped hills which would point towards a much earlier religion. Lansdown has a lot of the feel and archaelogical history that Avebury has. I used to live at Calne, which is close to Avebury, and walked a different dog around there.. Its strange being able to look back at the downs by Avebury from the racecourse, and know that neolithic, bronze and iron age people did the same. they probably have stood at the same viewpoint that people do today surveying the land around them, then moving on towards Stanton Drew and Maes knoll, and also to Glastonbury via Penhill and the Priddy circles...If stones, longbarrows, barrows and landscape could be seen in a more holistic manner we might get nearer to the truth as to how they work within the framework of their particular environment. End of thought for today!
Best wishes to everyone
