The Hawhaw

close

Anyone know what this is?
Its a circular thang on the orange OS map for Bath.

ST 644624

Not having the OS map for Bath with me...a HawHaw is a invisible boundry often found infront of Country Houses. It consists of a wall and ditch which can not be seen from the house or near garden but prevents animals entering the garden although it looks like they are happily walking aroundin the same space..

Is that clear?

This might help...

Another explanation; It could be 18th C parkland of Hunstrete House. If you look at an actual paper map and not a magical map, Hunstrete house, is a hotel, with what looks like an artificial lake in front of it, and the mound or tump is on the other side of the lake. This could be for a folly or pretend classical temple to sit on (bit like Stourhead)..
Following this through.. HUNstrete House has HAWHAW (old traitor in the last war) 20thC play on words?

Did anybody ever check this out?
