This is a shameless ploy to get the topic back up the top of the board.

Anyone else have any knowledge or thoughts? Otherwise I'll probably add it on the strength of what I have so far.

I noticed that people like Ike, Hamish, vulcan, festyboy and Rhiannon have an interest / knowledge / posts in the area. Any knowledge?

There is a fissure on Durdham Down in which palaeolithic remains (lion, etc) were found.

Redland is so called because the soil there is red! It may have been of significance to prehistoric man.

Here's a nearby stone:

Hi,

Your grid ref is very close to the highest point on the downs. I have plotted some lines from the Druid Stoke and from Ashely Down and the generated an elevation that can be seen here.

On passing the site i will drop by and have a look around for you.

There is also a road in Shirehampton called "Barrow Hill", sadly this site has been destroyed for housing.

When you draw a line from:

King Weston Barrows
Barrow Hill Road
Badocks
Ashley Down

There is a line of sight, very shallow to the point you talk about on the Downs (300ft). From the maps it looks like the highest point in Bristol. They must of have good field glasses ;-)

Regs,

Ike

As Durdham Down in close to both Clifton Camp and those is Stokeleigh Woods, I would suggest that it was very problaly there.

When I last visited the area I didn't know of it's existence, so next time I am down that way I'll take a look. I'd add it anyway on what you already know.....
