I must admit I do love an illuminated cathedral... And who says Stonehenge wasn't illuminated originally anyway? Ok there's absolutely no archaeological evidence whatsoever, but who ever let that get in the way of a good theory? :D

And yes - why not Avebury, too? There's obviously money to throw around, so why not a colour-changing uplight at the base of every stone? It'd look lovely! It could do with a tourism boost! ;)

Or maybe just a strong of fairy lights around it for christmas? You're welcome. :D

Quite. It's everyone's monument. ;) Why restrict the way it's presented to fit in with a totally guessed original use?
Seriously though there's going to be a big light show at Stonehenge just before the Olympics and no-one thinks that'll be a bad thing, so....
Sadly, its not everyone's monument ... you can have it for half an hour if your can afford the entrance fee, or are a NT member. Yes, I agree lighting it up could spin a bit more cash, late night tourists buses and winter evening visits. Who really cares, who actually goes there that often apart the well publicised tribe(s) of druids who have laid claim to it.

My personal view for what its worth is that Stonehenge is not a cathedral, (which do indeed look lovely when lit up at night) its not in a city surrounded by other buildings, it has stood on Salisbury Plain for five thousand years and is now a honey-pot for the tourist industry. I like to think the night reclaims it for the wildlife as it does at Avebury .. foxes, badgers, owls and bats flitting around. A dark night on Salisbury Plain must be an eerie experience. For anyone lucky enough to have a clear sky, it must be something mysterious and memorable.
