The whole history of Stonehenge is too complicated to go into here. there are zillions of books about it but it is worthwhile starting off with some of the more sober accounts.
A pretty good up-to-date one is "Solving Stonehenge" by Anthony Johnson (Thames and Hudson) which has a good overview of the legends, the placing of the stones and an interesting new theory of how they were set out.
