At the time, while standing on one of the floors, he swept his hand around and speculated that there could have been hundreds of houses within the local landscape. We don't know; we can only count those which we have found, but there's plenty of room for more.

Very true, but speculative. On the other hand there may be no more, just the ones found. Why is it that archeaologist speculate all the time yet pour scorn on a laymans speculation. I know that Stonehenge could have been the work of less than 100 men and these same 100 men could have transported and erected the stones in less than 20 years. When I see the remains of homes for 1000 workers then I'll admit that Neolithic man may have been a lot less intelligent than I give him credit for.

One other question, if hundreds of men must have been needed for the construction of Stonehenge how many men would have been needed to move the Balbek stone? And where did they live?

Hiya Gordon

I suppose it's entirely possible that there ARE lots more houses than were discovered or supposed, but even so - did all of them have to be involved in the building of Stonehenge?

I mean - we are kind of supposing that every single inhabitant had a hand in the transportation and erection of the stones. It's just as possible that however many (or few) people you think could erect Stonehenge did so while the other inhabitants did other things. Or just watched. ;)

Who knows, eh? :)
