certain kinds of stones have been revered worldwide and carried great distances. although not megaliths. here in america the native people held red pipestone (catlinite) sacred and carried it all over the continent. also, the cherokee honor a type of black soapstone. it is not unusual for people to attach importance to a certain type of stone.
but in the uk it looks to have been taken to giant lengths.

Red ochre has also been revered historically, although this is a clay rather than a stone. It has been used in neanderthal burials, African burials and I seem to remember there are some British neolithic/bronze age depositions of ochre too. This catlinite you mention has a similar colour.
