I CAN REVEAL TONIGHT (AS REPOTED ON BBC
SOUTH NEWS) THAT THE UK GOVERNMENT HAVE CANCELLED
PERMINANTLY ANY PLANS TO BURY THE THE ROAD PAST
STONEHENGE UNDER A TUNNEL. THE REASON AACORDING TO
GOVT SOURCES AT MORE THAN 1/2 BILLION POUNDS IT IS TOO
EXPENSIVE.

AN OFFICIAL ANNOUCEMENT WILL BE MADE BY THE GOVT IN THE
NEXT FEW DAYS. IN FACT NONE OF THE PROPOSED OPTIONS,
IT SEEMS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN,. INSTEAD IT BACK TO SQUARE ONE
THE PROCESS TO FIND A SLUTION FOR STONEHENGE WILL START
FROM SCRATCH. ONLY THIS TIME, DUE TO THE HIGH COSTS, THE
THE TUNNEL OPTION WILL NOT EVEN BE CONSIDERED.

WHAT A WAIST OF TAX PAYERS MONEY WEV'E HAD OVER THE
LAST SEVERAL YEARS, COUNTLESS, CONSULTATIONS,
PUBLIC ENQUIRIES ETC.., AND ALL FOR NOTHING!

WILL WE EVER GET THE STONEHENGE WE DESRVE DISPLAYED
IN THE NATURAL SURROUNDINGS OF THE WORLD HERITAGE
SITE. OR IS IT JUST A CASE OF THE GOVT NOT WILLING TO
PROVIDE THE NESESARY FUNDS.

IT SEAMS THAT THE GOVT WOULD PREFERE TO WAIST
MILLIONS OF POUNDS OF TAX PAYERS MONEY ON OTHER
CAUSES SUCH AS PROPING UP A BANK (NORTHRN ROCK)
RATHER THAN ENSURING THE LONG TERM PRESERVATION OF
ONE OF BRITAINS, AND ARGUABLY THE WORLDS FINEST
ANCIENT MONUMENTS, STONEHENGE & THE WORLD HERITAGE
SITE!

IN SHORT THE WHOLE FISCO THAT HAS RUMBLED ON FOR THE
LAST SEVERAL YEARS HAS BECOME A NATIONAL DISGRACE!

Relax, they're getting consultants over from the Irish government who have vast experience dealing with such sensitive issues. As an emergency stop gap the Irish Department for Transport are sending their surplus stock of 'It's hardly the fucking Pyramids now is it?' T-Shirts which they have not had to resort to using themselves yet.

I believe the Irish strategy is already being formulated where the replacement 6 lane motorway will skirt the rear of the existing carpark ( necessarily swerving to demolish the mesolithic post holes) but obviously 'futher away than the existing road, so stop fucking whingeing'. Sympathetic voters along the route are as we speak receiving planning permissions to quadruple their land value before selling on to accomodate a new Ikea and Argos Extra, oh and 23,000 new housing units.

Here's a video link to the news item as it appeared on BBC South Today:

Why be angry and depressed? The proposed solution stank and Stonehenge has been spared. The tunnel was never the problem; it was what came with it – the approach roads, two miles of brand new dual carriageway splitting the world heritage site in two, a million cubic yards of material ripped out, huge cuttings lit day and night. It WAS the Tara solution and now whatever is decided nothing as bad as that can ever happen.

Since virtually everyone that is anyone (apart from EH) has been totally against it (including The National Trust, Friends of the Earth, RESCUE, CBA, The Campaign to Protect Rural England, The Pagan Federation, Transport 2000, ASLAN, ICOMOS-UK, The Prehistoric Society and The Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society) – the fact its been abandoned has to be a good thing doesn’t it?

And since all of them are united in support of some speedy, inexpensive improvements including closing and turfing over part of the A344, things are going to look up from now on. Especially if EH now throws its weight behind the proposal (and why wouldn’t it?). So I say rejoice, Stonehenge has escaped Tara-isation forever.

I quite like the fact that you can drive right past it on an ordinary road - anyone can go and see it at any time - its a public monument. Why not leave it as it is?

Having said that I also quite enjoy the major shenanigans that you have to go through to get to see Newgrange. You have to have the right ticket for the right bus, bought from the right vendor - usually after a massive queue - then wait for said bus - no not that one - the other one!! then you have to drive aimlessly around the countryside for a bit with the occasional tantalising glimpse through trees of a maSSive space-ship type thing. Then you have to be guided by an appropriate guide person and more queues until you get to go up to it and inside - brilliant! Talk about building the tension - it was probably always thus. No entry before you had gone through the appropriate rituals and greased the palm of the relevant 'gatekeepers'.

Ireland have really got their visitor experience sussed - with liberal helpings of Euro dosh! well done! Its a shame that cant be applied to their 'Gold rush-esque' roads scheme (especially Tara).

I've just noticed this on the "Stone Pages" site.

Sorry it's a bit long...............................

UK CHARITY GROUPS QUESTION

http://www.theyworkforyou.com/user/?u=3440

In April of 1985 A Texas Tycoon offered to finance a new Stonehenge visitor centre and a 2.4-mile (4km) long bored tunnel under Stonehenge provided that: (a) UNESCO list the monument as a World Heritage Site by the following year (1986), and that; (b) Her Majesty's Government Highways Agency remove the A344 paved road beside the monument and all of the artefacts beneath the Heelstone. In November of 1986 UNESCO listed Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites as agreed and by 1989 A Texas Tycoon's improvement scheme for the A303 trunk road was put on Her Majesty's Government Roads Programme. Fifty (50) possible routes plus A Texas Tycoon's 2.4-mile (4km) twin bored tunnel scheme and new Stonehenge visitor centre were considered prior to a public consultation. Highways Agency held a Planning Conference in November of 1995 at which time it was recommended that THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE SCHEME to all of the UK Charity Groups was A Texas Tycoon's April of 1985 plan. In November of 1996 this only acceptable scheme was withdrawn from the Roads Programme because Her Majesty's Government was too embarrassed to accept the charitable financing offered by A Texas Tycoon. My question to all of the UK Charity Groups this coming New Year (2008) is: Do you still want to construct a new Stonehenge visitor centre and a 2.4-mile (4km) dual carriageway under Stonehenge; because their $2.0 billion (£1.0 billion) estimated cost was not, and is not, an issue.
