I quite like the fact that you can drive right past it on an ordinary road - anyone can go and see it at any time - its a public monument. Why not leave it as it is?

Having said that I also quite enjoy the major shenanigans that you have to go through to get to see Newgrange. You have to have the right ticket for the right bus, bought from the right vendor - usually after a massive queue - then wait for said bus - no not that one - the other one!! then you have to drive aimlessly around the countryside for a bit with the occasional tantalising glimpse through trees of a maSSive space-ship type thing. Then you have to be guided by an appropriate guide person and more queues until you get to go up to it and inside - brilliant! Talk about building the tension - it was probably always thus. No entry before you had gone through the appropriate rituals and greased the palm of the relevant 'gatekeepers'.

Ireland have really got their visitor experience sussed - with liberal helpings of Euro dosh! well done! Its a shame that cant be applied to their 'Gold rush-esque' roads scheme (especially Tara).
