let the conspiracy theories begin....

sigh

I was in France last week and visited the Lascaux Caves to see the drawings. It wasn't until we got there that I found out that the Caves and rock art on display were built and painted in 1983 and the original is not open to the public!!

Personally I felt ripped off. The reproduction was all very impressive, but it's 20th century AD not 20th Century BC. I would feel the same about a new Stonehenge. It doesn't seem so fascinating when you know how, when and who it was built by. What's the point? £10Million? Do me a favour...

"The fanciful disco reconstruction was a '70s Pompidou Centre-style aberration."

let the conspiracy theories begin...
Not so much a conspiracy theory Pete, more a note of caution.

Personally I can't see the Government forking out £60,000,000 for the sort of Visitor Centre at Stonehenge that most of us are hoping for when the private sector has done something similar with no cost to the State. I hope I'm wrong about that, but the mere fact that this private venture (if that is what it is) is now in the pipeline gives the Government yet another excuse to drag their feet on a proper long-term solution to the Stonehenge fiasco - time will tell.
