Instead of rafts think of huge curaghs, the modern coracle is only a diminutive surviver of this style of boat.

I don't think this type of boat would have been robust enough for the task, loading such a craft would be difficult and once the boat was loaded even the slightest contact with rocks etc on the journey would spell disaster.
